Child Safety Standards
Last Updated: May 3, 2026
Atlas is committed to the safety and wellbeing of all users, especially minors. This document describes the measures we take to prevent child sexual abuse and exploitation (CSAE) and protect young users on our platform.
Age Requirements and Verification
- Users must be at least 13 years old to create an Atlas account.
- Atlas supports a parental consent flow for users under 16, where a parent or guardian's email address is collected and verified before the account becomes active. This consent requirement can be enabled server-side when required by applicable regulations. Users aged 13-17 can currently sign up without parental consent, but the flow is available and can be activated at any time.
- Date of birth is collected at registration and cannot be changed after account creation.
Age-Based Guardrails
- Anonymous support circles are fully age-segregated. Minors are never placed in the same circle instance as adults. This separation is enforced at the database level and cannot be bypassed. All anonymous spaces are fully segregated by age pool.
- The community feed is age-segregated: strangers' posts remain within the same age pool. Minors do not see community posts from adults, and vice versa.
- Users of all ages can find each other, wave, become friends, and exchange direct messages. Cross-age friendships are allowed.
- All cross-age direct messages (between a minor and an adult) are subject to AI-powered content moderation before delivery. Messages that fail moderation are blocked and not delivered.
- When a minor turns 18, their friendships and conversations are preserved. Only minor-pool circle memberships are removed.
Content Moderation
- All user-generated content (text, images, and video including 60-second video check-ins) is reviewed by automated AI moderation before being visible to other users. Video moderation samples frames at one per second.
- For users under 18, moderation is fail-closed: if moderation is unavailable or encounters an error, content is blocked rather than posted.
- Content visible to minors is subject to stricter moderation thresholds than adult content.
- We use OpenAI's moderation API for content safety screening. Content is sent for safety review only and is not used to train AI models.
Reporting
- Users can report any content, user, or message directly within the app using the built-in reporting system.
- Reports are anonymous — the reported user cannot see who filed the report.
- Reports are reviewed and actioned by our moderation team. Actions include content removal, warnings, temporary suspension, and permanent bans.
- Content involving suspected child sexual abuse material (CSAM) is immediately removed and reported to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and relevant law enforcement authorities.
Messaging Protections for Minors
- Direct messaging for users under 18 is controlled by a server-side feature flag and may be restricted or disabled entirely.
- All cross-age direct messages (between a minor and an adult) are reviewed by AI content moderation before delivery. Messages that fail moderation are blocked and not delivered.
- On Android, screenshots are blocked during conversations. On iOS, screenshot detection notifies both participants.
- Messages auto-delete based on configurable expiration settings.
Tagging
- Minors can tag and be tagged by their friends. Tags are visible only to the post's audience.
- Tagged minors receive a notification and can remove their own tag at any time.
Search and Discover
- Users of all ages can search for and discover other users' profiles.
- Anonymous circle browsing is filtered by age pool. Minors cannot discover or view adult circles, and vice versa.
- Community feed content from strangers is filtered by age pool.
Additional Protections for Minors
- Location sharing, emotion map contributions, and journal snippet sharing are disabled by default for minors.
- Screen time nudges remind users under 18 after 60 minutes of continuous use.
- No behavioral profiling or algorithmic engagement optimization is used for minor users.
- Atlas does not use advertising identifiers, does not sell personal data, and does not serve targeted advertising to any user.
Enforcement and Accountability
- Users who violate our child safety policies are immediately and permanently suspended.
- We maintain moderation logs and report records for safety purposes, even after content deletion.
- We cooperate fully with law enforcement investigations related to child safety.
